How to Migrate files from your Mac to your new Linux laptop
What You’ll Need:
- Your MacBook
- Your new ZorinOS laptop
- An external hard drive (USB drive, portable hard drive, etc.)
Part 1: Copy Files FROM Your MacBook TO the External Drive
Step 1: Connect the Drive to Your MacBook
- Plug your external drive into your MacBook’s USB port
- It should appear on your desktop or in Finder automatically
- If it doesn’t show up, open Finder and look in the left sidebar under “Locations”
Step 2: Copy Your Important Files
- Open Finder on your MacBook
- Navigate to the files you want to move (Documents, Pictures, Desktop, etc.)
- Drag and drop your folders onto the external drive icon
- Or right-click on folders and select “Copy,” then go to the external drive and “Paste”
- Wait for the copying to finish – this might take a while depending on how many files you have
Step 3: Safely Remove the Drive
- Right-click on the external drive icon on your desktop
- Select “Eject”
- Wait until the icon disappears, then unplug the drive
Part 2: Set Up Your ZorinOS Laptop to Read Mac Drives
Step 1: Install the Mac File Reader
- On your ZorinOS laptop, click the grid icon in the bottom-left corner
- Type “Terminal” and click on the Terminal app
- Copy and paste this command exactly:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install hfsprogs
- Press Enter and type your password when asked
- Wait for it to finish (you’ll see text scrolling by – this is normal)
Part 3: Copy Files FROM the External Drive TO Your ZorinOS Laptop
Step 1: Connect the Drive to Your ZorinOS Laptop
- Plug the external drive into your ZorinOS laptop
- A window should pop up showing the drive contents
- If not, click the folder icon in the taskbar and look for your drive in the left sidebar
Step 2: Copy Your Files
- You should see all the folders you copied from your MacBook
- Drag and drop these folders to where you want them on your ZorinOS laptop
- Common places: Desktop, Documents folder, Pictures folder
- Or right-click and “Copy,” then navigate to where you want them and “Paste”
Step 3: Verify Everything Copied
- Open your folders on the ZorinOS laptop
- Check that your files are there and can be opened
- Once you’re confident everything is copied, you can safely remove the external drive
Important Notes:
- This process doesn’t delete anything from your MacBook – it just copies files
- If you get an error about “read-only” when trying to copy TO the external drive from your Mac, that’s normal – Mac drives sometimes have this protection
- The copying process might take 30 minutes to several hours depending on how much data you have
Think of it like this: You’re essentially creating a bridge between two different languages (Mac and Linux). The software we installed teaches your ZorinOS laptop how to “speak Mac” so it can read your files.

What Security Programs Should I Use?
One needs to re-learn what they think they know about digital security when using a Linux operating system vs Windows or MacOS.
This is primarily due to the transparent nature of open source operating systems which prevent the vast majority of unwanted applications from either working at all on a Linux device or attempting to run without you giving it permissions to do so.
We HIGHLY recommend giving this quick video a watch to learn the why and how related to Linux security -> Should Linux Users Run Anti-Virus?
